The only absolute
Is that there are no absolutes;
If this one would refute,
When all the factors one computes,
Then reasoning must show
Objections seem to be undue,
For what you think you know
Depends upon the point of view.
Take, for example, light –
The darkness in a box that’s sealed
Would be entire; right?
But other sources are revealed:
For light still radiates
From sub-atomic particles
In from what one creates
The cubic screening articles.
Can one remove all heat
To zero, absolute, in cold?
So far, complete defeat
Such tries have met with, we are told;
At any rate, the point
At which such zero level lies
Puts noses out of joint,
While learned men still theorise.
Then, in a moral code,
Where does the good or bad begin?
What may be à la mode
For one, in others is a sin;
To those who are the prey
The hunter is an evil beast;
No mind what prey may say,
To hunters they provide a feast.
Belief in God or not?
And which religion knows it all?
Who has all answers got?
Whose arguments to nothing fall?
Right those are who allow
That many things the truth may be,
And do not just avow
That black or white is all they see.
While atheists are right
In ridiculing, in ‘God’s Word’,
All writings slight and trite,
Which manifestly are absurd,
Still those who have belief
Show intellect a good deal more
Than those who come to grief
Believing nothing is the score.
Intelligence is here
In everything; at every part
Of what can well appear
Was a creation from the start;
Adapting, day by day,
Towards some purpose yet unknown;
‘But, that is Nature’s way,’ – ?
By whom, to Nature, way is shown?
To turn from the philosophy which forms my NaPoWriMo poem for the day to a question of photography and traffic, here is a view of some of the conveyances which passed in front of our garden today. I have managed to reformat my Sony Handycam which, although it takes low pixel pictures, has the advantage of a good zoom and a nice fast shutter speed.

You are a poetic philosopher, Col. I agree that black and white is not the way to go. Love your blue photo with the floating traffic jam. 🙂

Col, this poem of yours requires more thought than I can give after midnight. I have a feeling this falls into the category of great encapsulation of much thinking. As I was reading it, I could feel my English teacher standing over my shoulder perusing your poem and insisting we analyze each paragraph, which is to say each felt like a gem that required deeper viewing. I’ll be back to give it more thought. This one feels like a great one. Thank you. HuntMode

This has to be one of your best ever, Col. I was moved; it has a lot of wisdom in compact form. Lovely.

I am delighted you think so. I did hope it was good, and was a little disappointed at what seems to have been a fairly lukewarm reception compared with that given some of my drivel.

Good poem Col, we learn more from listening to others’ opinions than from a closed mind.

Indeed, a closed mind shuts out probably more sense than nonsense.

So true and beautifully written Col.
Not one of us have the answers and will we ever? So far all I’ve seen is people using religion to create just more misery and their only “god” is money and they use their power to mess up the minds of those who believe or are looking for something to believe in. I only believe in myself and the love of those close to me. I stopped looking for answers and don’t care in wondering anymore how everything was created or where it will lead to. What matters is where I am now and what I am doing with it. I let others believe what they want to, as long as they don’t try to force their beliefs down my throat or judge me for what I don’t believe in. Love the photo! 🙂

Indeed, any religion which forces itself like the Muslims or some fundamental Christians, where punishment or death is meted out for disbelief, are utter anathema.
