BIRTHDAY SUIT BIRTHDAY PARTY

The side view birthday party theme for last weekend reminded me of the first one we hosted for our elder daughter after we had moved to a home with beach access. After all the usual games and guzzling, the kids showed a great interest in seeing the sea, so I escorted the mob down our path. Of course, I was ignoring the fact that their mothers had dressed them all very smartly …

Soon I was holding armfuls of party dresses, and, in the cases of the less inhibited, underwear, while kids were digging in sand and splashing in water with squeals of delight.

I did get the vague feeling that the mothers weren’t going to be too thrilled about the ones who elected to do the sand-and-sea thing fully clothed, but what I hadn’t reckoned with was the fact that smart party dresses, when put back onto wet and beach-sand-covered bodies, lose some of their pristine beauty. Hair also tends to become somewhat disarranged.

The looks of stark horror on the faces of the fond mothers who came to collect their little dears later in the day were quite classic.

Apparently, the following year, many a battle raged between the kids who desperately wanted to attend another such party, and the parents who regarded it as an extremely bad idea.

Those who did come, came prepared!
