To make your spirits really droop
You need the classic Vista loop:
Computer boots up, but then
It shuts itself down again,
Till you say something like, ‘Oh, poop!’
Yes, my UK laptop suddenly had issues. At first, after hours of agony, I managed to restore it from the loop by using an earlier configuration. Then, the Net persuaded me that a file needed to be loaded to solve the problem for good. But it informed me that Service Pack 2 was required before I could do that. So I loaded it, and the loop returned. The trouble was that now it regarded that download as a successful one, and wouldn’t give the option of a previous configuration any longer.
Fortunately, the sister-in-law of a friend now working here is a computer boffin and currently doing computers at university as part of a BSc (Hons) degree, so armed with wine we called on her. Her husband is a composer, and heavily into paranormal stuff, so we had some fascinating conversation before computers were even thought of. That is another story.
Anyway, also fortunately, I had figured out how to get the Dos prompt by breaking into the loop with an F2, Esc, Enter, F8 sequence and she took it from there by going into Registry and deleting the two offending files. The first try was in X Drive and the loop simply came back, but after doing the same thing in C the problem was sorted.
Now I need to get my picture loading sorted out, and I may be able to blog again.
