Now there once upon a time
Lived a girl called Cinderella,
Who just didn’t have a dime
And who never met a fella.
And her step-mama was grim;
But then her step-sisters were worse;
She sure must have been quite dim
To have accepted such a curse.
You know how it all progressed
With a pumpkin and a fairy
Who was quite a bit obsessed
With the extra-ordin-ary.
With the prinny then she danced
Going clip-clop on glass slippers –
Till she got him all entranced
Notwithstanding clopping clippers.
She dashed off: a shoe remained
For the prinny to discover;
But it never gets explained,
One stayed whole but not the uv-ver?
Anyway, the slipper fits,
And she’s carted off to wedding;
So the prince is thrilled to bits –
She is, too, at where she’s heading.
‘And they all lived hap-pi-ly
Ever after,’ here should come in,
But I think you must agree
That such line looks pretty dumb in.
It’s unlikely that Mama
And Papa approved the marriage,
Or the mice now happy are
(Ones that towed the pumpkin carriage).
With the footmen frogs again,
Do you think that satisfied them?
And the other damsels, then,
With the Prince’s hand denied them?
And, of course, the step-mama,
Plus her wretched pair of daughters,
Would all be, from happy, far –
They no doubt wound up as porters.

Good question – who does the ‘all’ refer to in the fairy tale ending? Maybe everyone but the happy couple drops off the face of the earth?

I think it is a rule in fairy tales that the happy couple HAVE to live happily ever after, however improbable the circumstances may be. I mean, look at the practical difficulties of Sleeping Beauty getting to grips with the era of the Prince? As for the rest, you are right. Obviously, they can be ignored thereafter!

To live, being the object of envy and greed would not be a happy life…

There are, of course, compensations. All one has to do is develop a thick skin, and enjoy!
