‘Can I edit comments I left on someone else’s blog?
No. It is not possible to edit or delete any comments you have left on other WordPress.com blogs. Blog owners are in full control of the comments on their blogs, so you can try contacting the blog owner and ask them to edit or delete a comment for you. If the blog owner has not posted any contact information, you can try leaving a short comment asking how to contact them directly.’
I am wondering how it is that out of 467 000-odd bloggers, or 71 million sites where 345 million people read over 2,5 billion pages a month, I am the only one who seems to regard this particular feature as being utterly absurd?
OK, I have blogged for many years on a site where one can edit one’s comments in other blogs, so I tend to be a bit careless about checking before I ‘enter’. With the other blogs, there is no problem, though. I ‘tut-tut’ at myself when I find an error, or (far worse) something I have worded clumsily which might cause offence, and fix it.
Why should that not be allowed? ‘Blog owners are in full control’ – surely the ability to delete any comments that one finds offensive gives all one needs in that regard?
Another aspect I find rather disturbing about this would be that a blogger has the ability to take a hypothetical comment like:
I have to disagree with you on this aspect. The theory of relativity as it applies to time has been proven with adjustments which need to be made on satellites.
and do a little edit as follows:

I haven’t come across anyone whatsoever who likes the feature, and my LD blog shows that alternative programming is feasible. There, one can delete but not edit any comment in one’s own blog, while the commenter retains the ability to edit or delete. That seems to me to be common sense.

I SO agree with you on this, and have frequently bemoaned the fact that i cannot edit my comments on other blogs! Mainly, for me, because I abhor typos, and because of my one-handed typing, I make tons of them, and feel like an idiot when I have been too hasty in posting and only too late discover I have made a HUGE gaffe. The way I have dealt with it in some cases is to ask the blogger to please either correct or delete the comment and replace it with a corrected version. Sometimes they do, sometimes not for reasons of time, etc. but it still bothers me that I cannot retract my statements or edit and/or correct what I have written. I can edit my own comments and those of others on Goodreads – which has been a lifesaver!

What I find so astonishing is that it would appear all these millions of bloggers simply sit back and accept it without complaint. My other blog proves that the programming is easily possible for edits to be made on one’s comments on other blogs. I can think of no compelling reasons for it to be undesirable for that to happen, and yet the annoyance continues. I am sure that if enough bloggers make noises about it, changes will occur.

Pity so few seem to have made a fuss about it. If a few hundred thousand of the daily batch squealed, I’m sure they’d fix it pronto.

Yes I totally agree – you should be able to edit anything you say on the web whenever you want, it makes life less static and not just typos – you might think of something really interesting to say a little while later after reading blog posts and its not the same to come back and add another comment

I’d say it is more an amending thing. The trouble with adding is that the blogger may remain unaware of the fact that you’ve done it, whereas they’ll be alerted regarding another comment.

I so agree with you, as I often make the odd typo which really annoys me. I do like to be correct, so I guess I’ll just have to be more careful. 😉
