BACK UP OR SUFFER A REVERSE!

Everyone knows perfectly well that they should back up their files regularly or disaster can strike, so they do it religiously, right?

Oh, yes … about as religiously as most people attend church. In the case of so many Christians, to be baptised, married, and buried. Plus, maybe, the odd Christmas service.

My little warning voice started shouting at me last week. I have done a great deal of writing words and music and manipulation of pictures and things over the past few months – I hate to think of the number of hours that have gone into the simple books now in the pipeline. ‘It would be sheer disaster if I lost this lot,’ I muttered to myself. ‘Must save copies … tomorrow!’

Of course, tomorrow never comes. No saving had been done, and today when I breezed out of bed and switched on the computer it uttered some pathetic peeps and refused to do anything else.

Talk about panic! I phoned the local computer fundis and, thank heaven, they were working; so a few minutes later I had loaded the tower and was on my way, feeling far more sick than my dragging-on cold has caused.

They whipped the cover off, and the two techies simply packed up with laughter. ‘There’s a bug in your system!’ the one roared, and hauled out a simply enormous fried moth.

After fiddling, though, they announced that the actual fault had probably been caused by a surge – or the awful thunderstorms we have had over the past couple of days. Anyway, a few minutes later it was back in action.

My external hard drive was plugged in and gulping down data about two seconds flat after I had returned home!

I wonder if I’ll learn from the experience this time? I’ve had others like it, and obviously haven’t learnt from them!

One of the recent happenings I didn’t get a chance to blog about was the recent school sports of young R. Here is a pic of her doing a Grand Prix thing on her superbike.

Then we have a picture of yours truly doing a sprint to pop a flag in a bucket in the parents’ and grandparents’ race. All good fun!

  2. Phew! Glad you recovered it all, Col. I’m thinking about Cloud based stuff: but should I trust all my work to a nebulous concept somewhere out there in the ether?

    Love the superbike 😀

I have an external hard drive permanently plugged in – and there’s been more than one occasion when I’ve been extremely grateful for it. I hate computers.

Lovely photos. This is an excellent pc recovery program in case of disaster used by a colleague for several years: http://www.active-undelete.com/

LOL I’m sure you did not expect to find an actual bug in the computer. Glad its restored to full strength now. I have an external server that I back up to every night. but even that could fail. The worst would be to lose all my photographs.

I’ve got to buy a back up external hard drive first. I had better do it soon too. 🙂
