On Saturday we had occasion to visit some estates and a nursery on the North Coast. The nursery displayed a street renaming exercise to send up that of Durban’s intellectually challenged City Damager and Comic Council who were responsible, inter alia, for renaming Moore Road as Che Guevara Road.
It also had a large troop of mongooses, so unthreatened that when one of our party sat on the grass and pretended he wasn’t there one of them came up to him and nibbled at his finger. They move so fast, though, that decent pictures don’t happen easily. My camera doesn’t give hundredths of a second exposures.
The estate side produced sights like these:

No brain cells required for name changing. 😉 Why don’t they use their energy to do something constructive instead? Lovely gardens. We get mongai here all the time. There’s a whole bunch of them chases across our patio on a regular basis. 😉

I nearly wet myself laughing now!! Changing Guava Rd to Litchi Lane – so very like lush subtropical Durbs! And they can’t even get the names of their own freedom fighters right – “Che GuGuava” instead of Che Guevara! Sorry, LOL, it just makes me feel so much better about the disorienting renaming here in PTA, where no two streets retain their original names, and all the names look about the same.

… oh double LOL, I got that wrong, was hoping it was Durban’s city council with that lovely misspelling. Even so it’s hilarious. Here in PTA even 20 years back, there was a road called “Pecan Place” at the top and “Pencan Place” 50m down, at the bottom, and marked as “Pelican Place” on the bus plan. Brainlessness was around then too…

You’re so luck – having mongeese (?) (mongooses) running around like that! Not so sure about Che Guevara Road though. But the estate looks wonderful!

The mongooses would definitely object to the Che Guguava. Litchie is much better. Pity we can’t do the same for actual Durban streets.

I love watching mongooses in our garden, but, as you say, they move away so quickly when they hear a human. As for our renaming, I still live on Kingsway and not on Andrew Zondo Street. The sprayed over new street signs have not yet been replaced, either.

Let us hope that they give up on that renaming. We are still having mail addressed to us with the new name a street which used to have the same one on Durban beachfront.
