The layers in this picture are
To show the Free State near and far,
With cosmos flowers at the fore;
A strip replanted gives one more;
Then followed by a field of corn
(Or ‘mealies’, if you’re SA born),
While next there comes a line of trees
(I think the settlers planted these);
Near Harrismith those mountains shown –
As ‘Witteberg’ the range is known.

Terrific job and choice for the challenge. Your flowers add a warmth too. 😉

Did you take that photograph? It is postcard-perfect. Love cosmos. Actually, love flowers generally, and have a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson (MY FAVOURITE!) on my whiteboard for spring: “The Earth laughs in flowers”.
Your photo captures laughter so beautifully!

I did – in haste – after battling tp find a spot to pull off at the side of the road. *Screech, run-run-run, click, run-run-run, slam, zoom!*
Great quote, that!

The yearly display of cosmos is usually well worth the travel to far flung spots 😉

As the comsmos were far-flung by early feed transporters, the spots don’t have to be that far-flung, generally!

Thank you for saying so! I must say, I love them too, and too bad if they are a pest to some farmers.

Thanks! It was fun, too, to see how many distinct parts there are to that picture.

Interesting how many of the American bloggers also put up photos of these flowers. Makes a beautiful show!

That is interesting indeed. They are certainly spectacular, even though they are unpopular with South African ecology fundis.

They are classed as noxious weeds, but they are lovely indeed, so I have a love-hate relationship with them. Actually, I don’t think they are as invasive as reputed.

Cosmos flowers here galore
The mountains with their scary height
Are enough to give me fright 😉

Heehee – quite a friendly little mountain is Harrismith’s Platberg, because the base of it is already up the escarpment. It doesn’t loom like the Drakensberg.
