Once again, the food quiz of Pink Polka Dot has inspired me to show off my vast knowledge of matters culinary. It was a tricky one this time, and there is a vague possibility that I may have gone slightly wrong on one or two …
1. What is the main ingredient of huevos rancheros?
Er … let’s see – hue is colour, vos is ‘you’ in Latin, and rancheros are Mexican-type cowboys. So, we must have you cowboys’ red beef and, being Mex, maybe with educated farmers … I mean, taught tillers.
2. Where do empanadas originate from?
Sounds Spanish, and is obviously something cooked in a pan.
3. What is Quesadillas primarily filled with?
Not-quite-yet granny dillas, maybe?
4. What is a mimosa?
*smugly* As a Garden Judge, I know this one, Albizia julibrissin, a flowering tree from China.
5. Where does gado-gado originate from?
Boredom at home. So the two ous go gadding in pubs and whatnot.
6. What is paccheri?
Cherries squished together like in packets of dates.
7. What is a grand mimosa?
A big one of 4 above.
8. What is lamb lettuce better known as?
Mint sauce.
9. What is the main ingredient of a tarator sauce?
Anything which pours to form a lumpy peak surprising enough to warrant saying, ‘Tara!’
10. If something is cooked ‘a la crecy’ what is the garnish?
Chunks of flat stuff crumpled to make it all creasy-like.

Excellent answers, Col. 🙂 Love the Quesadilla one. I made my DiL laugh with my phonetic pronunciation. Apparently it should be case-a-deea. Why don’t the Mexicans learn how to spell properly? 🙂
