The Variety Show:
Look at this amazing picture of three hippo! They started off as a trio of floating black blobs – but by the time the camera was poised only mild ripples remained. Nearly-still waters have hippo running deep … anyone for a swim?
Next came the donkeys togged out for football.
Then we had some really good gnus, I mean wonderful wildebeest. Their funny antics make these the clowns of the bushveld.
The white-faced hartebeest (hartbees) always seems to have had a severe shock.
This kudu was very hard to spot until I put a lot of zoom on.
Warthogs are these I see?
These look like swans swimming at speed over the long grass – with legs hidden, just the top half is seen gliding along.

A hippo-swim? Thank you, but no thank you! These animals are a bit too ‘passionate’ to my taste.
I love the mental image of a gliding swan, that is amazing. And the graceful hartebeests.
Thank you for this wonderful safari, Col, I have enjoyed the trip.
Hums:
I’m a Gnu
How do you do?
Shall you step with your shoe
In my smelly goo?
So you need to buy new
And me ending in stew?

You are wise, indeed. Hippo are the top killers of people in Africa by far. Far worse than lions, crocs, elephants, buffalo etc.
Glad you found it fun!

It was most enjoyable, to be sure.
In spite of the considerable depredation, enough remained!

Love them all – would that I could live there, Col. Donkeys in pie-jammas are especially beautiful. Notice their tails look plaited at the top ‘au naturel’. I wanted to take pics of baby warthogs, but no luck there. Did you get any?

No, there were some but they were hidden in the grass. They are easier to see in winter.
