REALLY AWFUL ANNOUNCEMENT

Solar System Before Minor Adjustment

Solar System Before Minor Adjustment

The end of the world,’
the angel declared,
‘Will be after lunch,
so just be prepared …’
‘Oh, slobbery sobs,’
the people all wailed,
‘What, then, is in our
salvation entailed?’
With some slight surprise
 the angel-type stared,
‘Why, nothing at all –
no one will be spared.’

‘But that cannot be!’
The people cried out,
‘The whole universe
Is US, all about!’
‘I don’t know where you
Obtained such idea,’
The angel replied;
‘Mistaken, I fear!
For there cannot be
The slightest of doubt
That you little lot
Don’t have any clout.’

‘But we are in charge
Of fowls and the fish,
And animals, all?’
He smiled, ‘Don’t you wish!
In omniverse terms
When you disappear,
The total effect
Won’t even be near
To what would arise
In your mashy-mish
From one tiny ant
You happen to squish!’

I fear you are all too correct here, Col. Brilliantly spoken in really coruscating verse. You’ve excelled yourself. Pat on the back for you. 🙂

great re-discovery of your stuff. This poem might be required reading if it didn’t sort of suggest that our requirements are not of the greatest importance

You think those tidings might not be well-received? I would bruise all these tender little egos? Like the consternation at the thought that the sun and stars didn’t revolve round the earth.

    How true Col!!
I do think humans’ thoughts about their importance in the greater scheme of things are quite out of proportion!

One notices that the religions tend to encourage this view out of self-interest.

I’m a believer, but by no means a religious person.
According to me, humans are G-d’s biggest triumph and His biggest mistake…

We don’t really know about the triumph. Hopefully, there are some far more successful creatures in existence. We have a mindset of blowing humankind’s trumpet and saying how clever and rational and versatile we are – but we need to take a long hard look at all the things we simply can’t do. Our sensory perception, for example, is incredibly limited. Also, for all our supposed advancement, it is distressing how quickly one can get an expert on anything to confess, ‘We don’t know why – that is simply how it works.’ Knowledge? Ha!
