A rabbit is a creature
Indubitably cute
But they possess a feature
On which most folk stay mute:
It really is incredible
How much a bunny’s edible,
More creatures on them fed-able
Are, than one might compute!
All bunnies are quite randy,
So, frequently, they mate;
They keep equipment handy
To use, at a great rate;
A pair of rabbits soon will be
A quite substantial family,
And then a warren you will see –
They love to procreate!
So why don’t we eat rabbits?
A lovely rabbit stew
Was in most farmers’ habits,
And should be in ours, too?
Why do we guzzle cows and sheep
When herds of rabbits we could keep?
Their thinking, too, is not as deep –
Their fates they do not rue.
All foxes, wolves, and suchlike,
Find them quite ideal grub;
And bigger cats them much like –
Why don’t we join the club?
A great renewable resource,
And overcome with little force …
But there’s a problem here, of course –
They’re cute; and there’s the rub!
(This was prompted by seeing school petting bunnies here pictured, Sharkey and Caramel, multiply at a spectacular rate over a matter of months.)

I used to eat boiled bunny when I was a kid – very nice 🙂 and really lean as well – you can still by rabbit at some shops but I don’t know many people who eat them – you can’t eat the wild ones as they have diseases. Your poem sums it up perfectly – too cute to eat!

I wonder if the diseases are a new thing – I mean, in days gone by wild rabbits were a good part of the daily diet, and poachers would grab them with glee.

No, I don’t think I’d want to eat a rabbit unless I’m on the brink of total starvation of course. I think its got to do with the way we’ve been brought up. I know for years as a little girl I ate and liked tongue until the day I realised that tongue was actually an animals tongue I was eating…eeek, makes me nauseous just thinking about it

Isn’t it strange the way the mind overrides common sense on some matters of food? Delicious until you think about what it is. Lots of people can’t bear the thought of snails or even lobster.

Loved your rhyme. I think I might have had rabbit pie as a child, but I had no choice then. I used to see them hung up in our butcher shops in England, and didn’t think anything of it. I’m obviously not a bunny hugger. 🙂

I can hug bunnies and find them cuddly, but still regard them as Nature’s most successful food supply for predators – including Man.

I’ve never actually eaten rabbit – but your idea is quite valid. There are quite a lot of them. Cheap, easy meat and their fur makes the most divine jackets 🙂

I bought rabbit once. Frozen. Looked a bit like chicken. Not much meat – more bones. Never bought it again. I didn’t tell the family what they were eating, lol!

Sounds like a scrawny specimen, although all of them are bony. They are very tasty, though.

Never tried one.. although I’m not sure I ever would… some how its just not my cup-a-tea… although I can’t say why…. don’t eat snails, or frog legs for that matter neither do I eat fish… but suppose if I was hungry and that’s all that was available… I’d probably eat it and enjoy it too..

Strange that you have never gone for it. Properly prepared, they are delicious, but rather too full of bones. A de-boned stew is very good eating.

That is a really awful question indeed and I guess the same reason why I won’t eat Mopane worms. They are just too cute. LOL! We have friends here on a farm that breeds Flemish Giants for shows and she sells the meat as well but I try not to think about that when I see them. Sally is a huge animal lover like me too and it breaks her heart but if you have to make a living, that is what you do. It’s the same with hunters. I don’t like what they do by killing animals for sport or food but I won’t hate them for it. It’s their choice. So, I say if people do like to eat rabbit meat, it’s their choice too. I eat chicken, beef and fish but nothing else. I don’t like venison either. Love the rhyme and pics Col. Well done. 🙂 *hugs*

It is actually a serious point that rabbits are naturally designed as the most perfect prey species, and instead of availing of it humans freak out when they get too plentiful. Crazy. Actually, our substitutes like beef do a good deal of damage to the environment that rabbit would not.
I strongly oppose hunting for sport, but where culling is needed I suppose it is useful. Hunting for food if one really needs it is totally different.

Indeed they are Col. I think where the problem started was when they started putting rabbits out as pets. I am sure if cows and chickens were kepts as pets we wouldn’t eat them either. LOL! I totally agree with you and best of all is we never think of all the harmful toxins in beef most of the times, especially where E-coli is concerned. I also feel the same where hunting for sport is concerned. Hunting for food is quite another matter. Thanks for the lovely chat my friend and have a wonderful day! *big hugs*

Yes, well, amidst enjoyment of all the witty answers here I have to say the forbidden ‘OMG, what’s wrong with me’: love snails and frog legs and and cuttlefish and absolutely adore beef tongue, honeycomb tripe, kidneys, sweetbreads etc et al . . . Oh well, there has to be one in every lot I suppose . . .
