And now that this challenge has given me your attention, may I again request that you give urgent consideration to voting for Kate to become the Penguin Wayfarer? She is so close to being in contention, and no matter if you have a deep interest in English countryside and history or not, and regardless of where you may live, you are bound to find what she produces on her wanderings highly entertaining. So it is in your own interests to use this link before 24th June!

Were you searching for an insect in the plant? It must be tiny and yet you still managed to see it

The plant is enormous, and so is the insect! The pictures were taken at the full stretch of my arms above my head.

Love the caption for the first photo and that last one is spectacular.

I tried to get one with bees in it as well, but the silly things buzzed off every time I clicked. I nearly missed the framing opportunity for the last!

it’s been so long since I saw a Hottentotsheretjie!! Fascinating creatures they are 🙂
And that plant must be quite spectacular!!

I’d love to hear how someone whose only language is English would try to pronounce that!
It can take ten years or more before the flower spike appears. This species doesn’t die after sending one up, unlike the true ‘Century Plant’ – americana – which actually takes about 30 years and then dies.

I noticed that one can vote again and again for Kate! Maybe that’ll help to increase her number of votes.
Love that last picture. My ship coming in, perhaps??

Most strange. It wouldn’t allow me to when I tried after reading this.

Wonderful shots, Col. That last one is brilliant. 🙂 Praying Mantises aren’t my favourite goggas. I know they’re harmless and good, but why do they have to look so creep? I already voted for Kate. Wish we could vote more than once.

Thanks – I tracked down and visited the subject of that last pic (the distant one).
They are creepy, indeed!

Weird and wonderful. I voted for Kate last week too, but she’s a long way behind: she needs more votes.

Aren’t they?
Fortunately she seems to have enough now to make the cut, anyway. I find the current leaderboard a bit inexplicable. Good PR skills?

Now that is just too amazing Col! Great shots there my friend. I love the Praying Manthis! Great entry for the challenge. 😀 *big hugs*

Thanks! Just sorry the bees wouldn’t co-operate because they would have shown up the size of the mantis.

Oh, they are naughty indeed. Next time you might want to call Hugh. 😀

Great shots! And terrific plug for Kate!
How big is that “praying mantis”?
And what kind of plant is that?

I hope she makes it!
The mantis was some 3 – 4 inches long. The plant spike is big; well over my head – Agave attenuata.
