I could watch the movies move, but the sounds were soundless.  After searching the web, I found all sorts of ‘settings’ suggestions and tried them all.  I reinstalled the player in various ways.  I tore hair out and swore (at least I got a sound out of that) but nothing worked.

Then I found this suggestion from Mozilla Support to somebody with the same problem way back when:

‘I’m sorry, but I have to ask, have you checked the Youtube player’s volume?

‘Of course it can’t be THAT!’ I snarled, but called up a clip anyway and clicked on the speaker thingy at the bottom.  Sure enough, it was set to ‘Mute’.  Sliding the (normally hidden) slider gave sound, glorious sound.

Whether this arose from the update process, or I simply hit that button by accident on the next clip I tried to play, I know not.  I can only reason that whatever the reason for the reason may have been, that was the reason.

Just in case there are any other utter dimwits out there who look for all the complicated solutions before checking out the simplest one …

I have just completed the process to Proof stage for another of my novels to go on Amazon, which was fairly time-consuming.  We had a couple of electricity-outs just for fun.  Then we had a kiddy Sports Day this morning, and a birthday celebration for  Sn-i-Law this evening.

This afternoon we travelled some distance to the only music shop in the whole of Durban which claimed, after I had phoned around, to have violin strings in stock.  When we got there, they were out of E strings, so I had to come away with only G, D, and A.  I tried to get two of the latter, but I had taken the last one.  Can you believe it that a whole city can run out of such things?  Then, to add to my ire, they asked a price over 60% more  than they had quoted on the phone.  After a flood of toys had descended from my cot, they did a quick downward adjustment.

Tomorrow another spot of socialising.  It seems I no sooner catch up a bit on blogs when I drop behind again!

Every time my computer goes in for a repair and I have to replace all the software, it is usually the easy stuff that causes a hitch.

  2. adeeyoyo says:

I have had the notice of the update twice, and each time it fails to do its thing! And that has happened to me before… but eventually it downloaded so I’m hoping it will again, lol!

  3. SuziCate says:

I’ve done that sort of thing before, too!

I wasn’t going to comment when I first read this…let you stew! But it appears many of us have been the same route.
I have a set of three speakers plugged into my laptop and spent once spent a fruitless and very frustrating 20 minutes going through certain programs very gingerly (as I am completely IT ignorant) looking for the reason for the silence. When I eventually voiced my anguish someone from the kitchen helpfully shouted back.
“Have you switched on the speaker?”

Sounds like you’ve been very busy for the past few days. Don’t worry though, the blogs will still be around when the socialising is done 🙂

I’m also guilty of the mute button thing when someone appears on Skype. Hubby always sorts me out though. 🙂 Why are you experiencing so many power outrages? 🙂

  7. bulldog says:

Been there done that… cursed the computer, cursed the software and then cursed myself for my own stupidity…

  8. Sonel says:

It’s always just that one little setting that makes the difference Col. We find that out all the time. 😆
Struggling to keep up as well, so don’t feel bad. 😀
    Have a great Sunday!
    *big hugs*

  9. I know the feeling (about getting behind with blogs). As for technincompoopery, I am the champion.

  10. well, it’s funny when it is someone else! Yeah, i do that too. Look for the big solution without checking the simple and obvious first. It’s not always the simple but often!

Simple settings and phone quotations can make life difficult at times.

  12. nrhatch says:

That happened to me once . . . I had sound but it was oh, so, low. Before that I hadn’t realized that the youtube videos had volume controls.

Glad you got it sorted out.

Last time I got strings for my guitar, I got the last ones too!

  13. disperser says:

. . . I’ve heard of G-Strings, although I find them uncomfortable, but what are all the other letters?

    Are they any more comfortable?

You have the right to remain silent - but please don't!
