Had netlessness for most of day:
Our power was curtailed;
The cutting-off of trees away
From lines, was why it failed.
The opportunity was took
Defrosting fridge to do,
And also, then, to take a look
At D I Ys, a few.
The kind, with electricity,
Which gives one quite a shock,
But when the house is voltage-free
Then lacks that current block.
Of course, a danger therein lies:
If they should switch it back,
To give a rather bad surprise
And spark off an attack.
When halfway through the enterprise
It gives a nasty jolt –
Oh, fearsome is the risk that lies
In facing such re-volt!

Our power went off the other night, and it did something weird to the freezer when it came back on: the temperature went down and down and down. Which made me wonder how we would keep warm in this entirely electric house if it went off for longer than an hour or so, like for 10 days after the hurricane of Christmas 1999. In the old house we’d have a roaring fire in the stove to keep us warm and even boil a kettle or make some soup. Jock suggests we’d take a train to Cannes and stay in a hotel!
