Just what I was going to ask Viv? Are plants and flowers in danger of extinction like animals
Not only in danger, but increasingly made extinct. If a plant vanishes, it is not as noticeable as when animals do. In fact, without places like Kew Gardens, many more plants would have vanished completely from the planet.
Isn’t it just?
They are. I wish I could see them massed somewhere.
They certainly are spectacular!
Well that’s gorgeous!
They are really bright blooms.
I thought one-and-a-half blooms were pretty, but the four are dazzling.
What do the humans do to this lovely flower to endanger it?
Irresponsible collection to sell for horticulture or for ‘muti’ – (medicinal purposes). Also agriculture taking over areas where it grows. Also, wildlife like baboons, when finding a shortage of preferred foods, will uproot them to eat the tubers.
Thank you, Les. I can’t grumble at the baboons – part of the natural ecosystem. But the human greed behind the rest is to be deplored.
The baboons and other animals are also a problem caused by the humans, who encroach more and more on their feeding areas
