‘I thought I saw a dragon fly
Out near the woods today,
Which is the strongest reason why
You need to keep away!’
Her warning seemed a silly thing:
‘Such insects do not scare
When on the ground, or on the wing,’
Is what he did declare.
So to the woods he did proceed
Without the slightest pause,
It was an awful shock, indeed,
When he got seized by claws.
It shows that one should always be
On lookout for a space
Between two words, so one may see
What really can take place.
This ditty should have ended thus,
But adds the reason why
To finish off without such fuss
Makes what you’d drag on fly.

Very clever, loved it. Sounds like the sort of witty thing I used to read as a kid in my golden treasury of poetry. Photos and illustrations complete it perfectly.

I’ve never seen a dragon fly . . . but I’ve seen a dragonfly fly by a time or two. Good use of space to set the pace.

Quite a difference that one little gap can make!
And a fly-by-night isn’t one that is unzipped going to bed. And on a racetrack one may see a horse fly, but you find a horsefly on a horse … all very confusing.

when I was just a little girl I saw dragonflies all three
They were flying in a circle just above the tree
They were so big, like giants, yes I said they were
Nobody would believe me. They said I caused a stir!
But I know that I saw them, I know that they were there
But maybe imagination made me stand and stare
Although many years have passed, and I am seventy-three
I know I saw these dragonflies flying around the tree
But if you don’t believe me, I shall fully understand
I saw them flying but never saw them land
