NaPoWriMo, with increasing sadism, prompts the invention of a curtal (meaning cropped) sonnet, and gives, as example, one by the inventor:
Pied Beauty
Glory be to God for dappled things —
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced — fold, fallow, and plough;
And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him
– Gerard Manley Hopkins
A Curtal Sonnet on a Curtal Sonnet on Beautiful Pies
Curtal sonnets have the strangest scheme,
They rabbit on throughout the second line
And hare through third before they even try
Some sort of rhyming scheme of which to dream;
But then they rhyme a line which comes out fine;
And now a match to try you will hares-pie.
At this point they go bunny-hugging strange
Until hare line that’s fine they will design;
Try to es-pie that hare-pie-ness pass by;
So strange that’s followed by small change:
But why?
I don’t know how you’re able to come up with all these poems, I would take a whole day to come up with something like this. Well done!

Lol I was tempted to write one about pies but I didn’t fancy the prompt much but yours is far funnier than I could muster – bravo! I’m all pie-eyed.

Heehee – I wonder if Hopkins was that when he wrote it?

As long as you don’t want to be pie-eyed as well, that’s fine! Although a beer to go with them, come to think of it …

hahahaha. No thank you! Of course – never forget the beer. 😆

There’s no arguing against the excellence of your curtals (or whatever they’re called) which – give or take the odd squeezed pun – are poetic. I even quite like the Hopkins one, because he isn’t so intent on his unrhythmic invention of sprung rhythm.

That didn’t come out quite as I meant it! I meant that your poems were better than Hopkins.

He would have been SERIOUSLY miffed at that opinion!

There are some of Hopkins I really like. However, in the main I must admit that I have the feeling he worked too hard at being clever.

If you had used Bulgarian I would have understood it – as it is, the translator insisted it was English!
