And, fittingly, the last NaPoWriMo prompt calls for a goodbye poem.

I have written well over 30 this month already.  I could therefore acquire, and recline upon, a pile of Laurus nobilis leaves.  I won’t, though.

From this poem writing spree
We must now take leave
In words valedictory,
Prompt-cred to receive. 

Should one offer up ‘goodbye’?
But an atheist,
You not call on God on high,
Might full well insist. 

(‘God-be-with-you’ is what means
That-there parting shot,
So a non-believer leans
Counter to that lot.) 

‘Farewell’ is a better bet,
Though the ‘fare’ part, now,
Could old-fashioned seem to get –
Out of place, somehow. 

One might settle on, ‘So long!’
But what has this length?
‘Cheerio,’ is also wrong;
‘Pip-pip,’ has no strength. 

‘See ya!’ lacks all merit, too,
With its common touch;
 ‘Oh-rev-wah’ the French all do –
I don’t like it much. 

Seems the only thing that’s left,
This sad state to save,
So that you don’t feel bereft
Now we’re leaving … wave!
