Quasimodo

Quasimodo is

  a man you may see

As one of few of

  Christianity

     That you ever find

     Of legitimate kind –

For a genuine

  bell-heaver was he!

All others who pinned their

  salvation-type hopes

On clangours with clangers

  attached to some ropes,

     Remember them well,

For the swell of their knell

Confers better chances

  than have saints or popes.

I’d be a banger of a clanger or on the ropes, think I should keep my feet firmly on the ground.

    Victor Hugo told
    The tale of Quasimodo
    For whom the bells tolled
(No, not the ring of Frodo)

    Moral:
Salvation comes to those who knell
(I don’t mean tones on mobile phones
For which I blame A Graham Bell)

  5. Your poem rings a bell: my first husband was a bellringer – it was just an excuse for a pub crawl after visiting some distant bell tower.
