When we throw a party,
Often first thing that we try,
With guests all hale and hearty
Is to have a little braai.
(Those who are not locals,
I must explain to you,
In your sort of vocals,
That would be a barbeque.)
Gazebo I got ready
To protect us from the sun,
Repaired to make it steady,
And to shelter everyone.
The sun blazed as expected
For the first part of the day –
But then we grew dejected,
For a downpour came our way!
We had to use a brolly
For the cooking of the meat,
And then, in awful folly,
Still outside, all took a seat.
With fortitude amazing,
In gazebo we remained,
Notwithstanding torrent, grazing
While some leaks down collars drained!
We still had lots of fun, though,
For the liquids served inside
Meant one didn’t miss the sun so,
And discomforts served to hide!
A braai is always great, no matter what the weather is like!

That sounds like a typical BBQ on the UK..not SA…but it seems to rain everywhere,,today it is in Bulgaria….Regardless of rain and wetted collars it sounded as tho everyone had fun…Good Spirit never gets beaten by a wee drop of water…

High fun at the braai (and I did know that word, we had SA friends) Your poem is not at all awful, even if the weather was.

And unless wine or beer is involved, the imbiber of the liquid refreshment also lifts the spirits to do so!
