Life can (still) be a real beach!

One of the saddest things about losing our old home was the lack of access to an unspoilt beach through the fascinating dune forest.  I had forgotten that I am one of the custodians of a conservancy which has just such access, and today when I fetched young J from playschool we took a very slight detour, let ourselves in through the locked gate, and wandered down the 130 steps through the greenery.

Then, over the dune:

Beach path 1

Beyond that – the beach!  An attractive one, with an area free of rocks, a sandbank (that will come and go), then some good rock pools, and situated in one of my favourite shell-collecting areas where cowries are often found.  YAHOO!

As may be seen from the white horses, the day was too windy for the beach to be pleasant, but soon … 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

On the way back, I dutifully filled a bag with whatever wind-blown litter I could find, while four-year-old J verified the number of steps.

PS: Little J is not so little anymore. They do grow up so quickly. 😀

Wow. I miss being close to a beach. Enjoy it and I’m impressed she verified the step count. Numbers have never been my strong suit 🙂

I would hate not to have one nearby.
She has been given a boost on counting from hearing her sister, good at reading and English, battling with numbers a bit and needing to practise!

I love the ‘secret place’ just waiting for adventures to unfold. My dad found one (not as picturesque, but full of mystery for us youngsters) and it became a regular Sunday afternoon outing.

Things like that stick In the memory. I found a number of them as a young boy inclined to go on solitary explorations of the coastline near The Heads, Knysna, where there were cliffs, and caves, and coves, and pools, and buck, and coneys, and I even saw a leopard.

  14. What a lovely memory. Such an approach to the beach would have the sudden appearance of the ocean seem magical. I miss beaches like that. When I moved from Florida to Washington, I found the beaches here are rocky, windy and cold.

  15. How could you forget your duty as custodian of such a perfect paradise? Young R looks positively joyous as she skips down the sandy path. I’m sure you’ll be visiting there quite often. 🙂

  16. A wonderland! I love the way you have to go through the sculptural trees, down a little path, then theres the beach sitting like a lady in wide skirts spread out for a visit and a picnic. Hope you’ll show us more pictures from time tot time – even though it’s the same spot, that sort of environment is always changing. Lucky you!
