One of the saddest things about losing our old home was the lack of access to an unspoilt beach through the fascinating dune forest. I had forgotten that I am one of the custodians of a conservancy which has just such access, and today when I fetched young J from playschool we took a very slight detour, let ourselves in through the locked gate, and wandered down the 130 steps through the greenery.
Then, over the dune:
Beyond that – the beach! An attractive one, with an area free of rocks, a sandbank (that will come and go), then some good rock pools, and situated in one of my favourite shell-collecting areas where cowries are often found. YAHOO!
As may be seen from the white horses, the day was too windy for the beach to be pleasant, but soon … 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
On the way back, I dutifully filled a bag with whatever wind-blown litter I could find, while four-year-old J verified the number of steps.
That’s such a beautiful beach. 🙂

There’s nothing like wandering a stretch of beach and having it all to oneself. Lovely shots.

It is rather pleasant having an uncluttered stretch even in the height of holiday season, indeed!

It is. Went again today (forgot to take pics) and J found two cowries all on her own! I only got one.

Now that was quite a find Col. A treasure for sure. I can see you and J are going to have lots of fun in the summer. Great shots! 😀
PS: Little J is not so little anymore. They do grow up so quickly. 😀

You have lived the nice life and can sustain yourself with memories . . . memories the kids have yet to form. You get your joy from helping them do that.

Don’t worry – I still get a lot of joy from doing it, too!

it may not be ‘the old beach’ but at least you do have a beach….I live in the middle of Bulgaria and there is only one beach which is 200k away….so I enjoyed your photos

We spent much of our earlier lives some 600 km away from it – 1000 km from my home stretch! So I sympathise.

Wow. I miss being close to a beach. Enjoy it and I’m impressed she verified the step count. Numbers have never been my strong suit 🙂

I would hate not to have one nearby.
She has been given a boost on counting from hearing her sister, good at reading and English, battling with numbers a bit and needing to practise!

I love the ‘secret place’ just waiting for adventures to unfold. My dad found one (not as picturesque, but full of mystery for us youngsters) and it became a regular Sunday afternoon outing.

Things like that stick In the memory. I found a number of them as a young boy inclined to go on solitary explorations of the coastline near The Heads, Knysna, where there were cliffs, and caves, and coves, and pools, and buck, and coneys, and I even saw a leopard.

The only animals we found were stray cats – the small variety, mice, and the odd hedgehog or frog.

What a lovely memory. Such an approach to the beach would have the sudden appearance of the ocean seem magical. I miss beaches like that. When I moved from Florida to Washington, I found the beaches here are rocky, windy and cold.

The ones in Florida seem special. Still, having ANY beach, albeit with wind, cold and rocks, is better than none at all.

How could you forget your duty as custodian of such a perfect paradise? Young R looks positively joyous as she skips down the sandy path. I’m sure you’ll be visiting there quite often. 🙂

Amazing that all the drama put it out of my mind!
And thanks for mentioning young R – who wasn’t there! I have fixed my error.
We wanted to go again today, but alas the weather said ‘No way!’

A wonderland! I love the way you have to go through the sculptural trees, down a little path, then theres the beach sitting like a lady in wide skirts spread out for a visit and a picnic. Hope you’ll show us more pictures from time tot time – even though it’s the same spot, that sort of environment is always changing. Lucky you!

How’s the new place coming along, by the way?
And how far are you from the beach? Walking distance?
LikeLike
Still unliveable, but getting there at last. It has been gutted and put back together. New windows and door throughout, new ceilings, adding a bathroom and bedroom, redoing the kitchen throughout – nightmare.
Easy walking distance to the public beaches; difficult walking distance back, in summer! Ditto mountain biking.

I am busy watching the BBC series Grand Designs. A brilliant series about house building. It might help with inspiration!
Difficult coming back? Uphill, I guess?

We have watched it well before we found ourselves involved in an exercise which could well feature there, and never thinking it would come to that. One thing led to another …
Very uphill.
