Over long weekends South Africans living inland tend to swarm to the sea, and Durban is a destination within reach. We are among those Durban residents who tend to take breaks in the opposite direction. Instead of heading for the mountains, for which a weekend is needed, we are able to get a total contrast in environment with an easy day trip to the Natal Midlands, and that’s where we went yet again yesterday.
We revisited one of the sites of my next book launch (when everything finally comes together) and then went on to a Pizzeria which has become very popular. Very pleasant – but in this case we are lucky enough to have an even better one five minutes away from home. Still, the change of altitude and air was refreshing. The temperature was particularly refreshing.

The little streak of blue in the centre where clouds meet hills is actually Midmar Dam, a stretch of water large enough for yacht racing, waterskiing, and the famous Midmar Mile swim.
Don’t forget that this is midwinter on a dull day – the mountains were invisible in the cloud. In spring and summer the area is transformed into vivid greens.

dont know why the weather is always crap there but the little cottage industries and things more than make up for it

I think you are lucky to have such true wilderness within reach. Flying from here to NE England, on a good day, you can see that most of the countryside is dotted with man-made constructions. There is very little left that is truly wild.
