A Really Awful Job That Gets You in a Flap

South Africans in need of work
Have got it in the bag –
By roadside you just need to lurk,
And flap a big red flag

The job requirements are few:
As long as you can stand
Then all else that you need to do
Is move your arm and hand

When road construction’s taking place
One lane is all that’s left;
Your flag is flapped in traffic’s face
To show they are bereft

But never should you intervene
If lanes get in a jam –
As long as flapping flag you’ve been
You do not give a damn

For regulation of the flow
Is something you don’t try;
If some won’t let the others go
That’s not your fish to fry

One-handed, mobile phone you use
Throughout entire day
Without attracting least abuse –
But some bill you must pay!

The reason for these silly jobs
Is Gov’ment policy;
Reduces unemployment mobs …
Completely uselessly

(During our recent Midlands trip we spent over an hour and a half in stop-start-crawl traffic having flags waved lackadaisically at us and watching appalling manners by various drivers – all ignored.)

  1. We have more flag wavers in the summer ( Is it a jobs program for college kids?) But we do have lots and lots of road construction/repairs moving at a snail’s pace. I sweat they intentionally start them whenever there’s a heavy travel period – then stop them and let them sit quiet until the next busy time. Grrrrr

    I don’t think we have flag wavers here, Col, must be a South African thing… we just have miles (and miles and miles) of cones. We do have a lot of drivers with appalling manners, however… and appalling driving ‘skills’.

    So very, very South African. I bet the road is not completely done yet and will irritate many a holidaymaker, too.
