You are Really Awfully into Light Operetta.

Though you insist that Haydn

You cannot be abidin’,

And Beethoven, you claim,

Did not deserve his fame,

Plus you declare that Mendelssohn,

Of all your favourites, isn’t one,

And all the stuff of Handel

To mods can’t light a candle,

While mournful things by Brahms

Just have you up in arms,

And when ‘Schubert’ is said to you

You’ll ‘Bless you!’, as to an ‘Achoo!’

Things Sousa, Strauss and Sullivan

You will consign to nearest bin;

Not often Bach you care to do,

And Offenbach you steer clear, too? …

………………………………………………………

My latest listening in the car - this cost me R10-00 at the local flea market. The whole operetta done in English. Superbly sung and great fun.

Well, there you’re wrong, I must profess,

So what you know of his, just guess?

‘Infernal Gallop’, of great fame,

(Though few may call it by that name);

From ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’,

With many merry scenes unfurled,

  This double affirmation of ability,

Which tends to need considerable agility,

Comes with that dance to end the show …

Which as the ‘Can Can’ you will know!

Can’t be having with all this Chopin an’ changin’
    It grates my musical bones,
My Rachmanin is off, and my Bach needs a bite,
So I believe I will stick to the Stones.

    The pedant in me
    Doesn’t like what I see:
    Intrusive small ‘e’
    Hides in Haydn, dear me!
    But a missing small ‘c’
    In Schubert? Tee hee!
    And Felix is missin’
One thing: put that ‘s’ in!
    But the message, my dear,
    Is strong, loud and clear:
    The old just ain’t stopping
    When it’s clippity-clopping!

  4. I’ve sung in man operetta, including lots of beloved G&S, Merry Widow, Oklahoma, West Side Story etc etc etc while moonlighting with oratorio, Verdi inter alia. I love ’em all, including your list. Nowadays, I’m sad to confess, I can no longer hold an alto part.nor can I stand long enough to get to the end of a long piece. It makes me sad to find all the things I can’t do any more.

  5. I joined the G&S society at university. Didn’t have an issue with the music but the discipline was poor 😦 Stuck to the choral society and religious masses in the end.
