For R5-00 at our local flea market yesterday (equivalent to £0-22p or $0-31c) I purchased a set of one CD and one DVD – obtainable from Amazon for £23-63 or R534-81. For anyone who grew up in and shortly after WWII years, this provides an amazing trip down Memory Lane and into the history of those times. The cine clips on the DVD are fascinating, and the recordings of the music plus the most notable speeches of Churchill, as well as the declaration of war by FDR in America after Pearl Harbour, add to the feeling of ‘being there’.
Oh, and far more expensively (for another R5-00!) I got a CD of Bill Haley and the Comets with all the usual suspects on it, and some I’ve not heard before. I didn’t even know that he had done a version of our Rhodesian (as was then) classic, Skokiaan – which refers to a home brew of great potency – or that the last tour of his life in 1980 was to South Africa.
i didnt grow up with them but those wartime songs do have a nostalgic feel to them… and what an absurd bargain!

Many of them seem to have survived way past the war years. What a bargain, indeed. I am still enjoying it.

I love flea markets or so called car boot sales here in UK. I wish they were around in Poland when I was younger.

I still use a number of bargains I got at UK Car Boot Sales! I even bought a bicycle at one and then resold it at a profit just before I returned to SA three months later!

It certainly filled me with glee. I was waiting for the seller to say, ‘Oh, not that one; that will be … (an-arm-and-a-leg)’ but I even had a packet thrown in!

Rock Around the Clock was the very first record I ever bought. I can’t remember what I paid for it, but it probably cost about a quarter of my net week’s salary as a production secretary at the Beeb.
I’d love to see your DVD.

The DVD is wonderful. Apart from the shots of Vera Lynn and many others performing, it has some amazing war footage of the Blitz, wrecked London, war theatres sea, land and air, the King and Queen, Battle of Britain, Hitler ranting, occupation of Paris, etc etc etc.
