I must say I find it a little bit strange

This effect comes from the sun setting inland, behind one when looking in this direction …
As this more panoramic view shows, the sunset is reflecting on clouds above, which in turn reflect on the sea. I can’t ever remember seeing this happen before. Although it looks rather pinkish in the picture, the actual sight was distinctly orange.

Nature’s putting on some pretty impressive shows at the moment, Col. We recently had rainbow-coloured clouds (I only saw photos of them, unfortunately!) but like the effect you’re describing – very impressive!

Unlikely to see that as our sun (well, everyone’s sun of course) rises east and sets west (as it normally does) all the while travelling over the sea during the day. Basically the sun is never behind us or the sea.

Well, at least that is straightforward. The most confusing place is Cape Town where, depending on where you are, the sea and Table Mountain can be in directly opposite directions. I soon learnt not to rely on bearings based on either of those two features.
