Actually letting the cat out of the bag is completely irrelevant here, it has an entirely different meaning and goes back to old Royal Navy days and the cat-o;nine-tails, which was kept in a bag.
When the cat was let out of the bag it indicated that a seaman was to be flogged the following day.
It was let out of the bag to let everyone know what was to happen.

It is not irrelevant in general usage. The term has come to be understood in the context of the release of any information likely to cause disquiet.
