Today’s a day of mourning
For the so Dis-USA;
On this day came the dawning
Of when all hell came to play,
They left the British Umpire
That made them stick to rules,
Now have a flaming Trump-pyre,
Which serves them right, the fools!

My partner is American and we argue endlessly about the rules and the right way to pronounce clerk, derby, Worcester Gloucester etc… aluminium/aluminum I had to concede…

I don’t know why you conceded aluminium — Al You MIN Ee Um is the obvious way to go!
English pronunciation is crazy, anyway. Imagine getting ‘Bewlee’ out of Beaulieu, or ‘Arlsf’d’ out of Alresford, or ‘Foy’ out of Fowey. Not to mention ‘Chumley Fanshaw’ out of Cholmondeley Featherstonehaugh!

I don’t think all those ex colonials, and some of the English, commentators quite approved. I don’t know why

Hey-hey-hey! LOL! I am a proud American and I celebrated the 4th in style. But just in case you have any thoughts to the contrary–I did NOT vote for this idiot! I’ve never been more embarrassed at the global chaos he’s spreading. I heard today that a “Baby Trump” balloon will be flying when he visits the UK next week. He’ll hate that. I will be thrilled. LOL!

On cannot but admire the many good qualities Americans have demonstrated over the years. It is, however, an established British custom to mock them. This is not done in fun when it comes to the latest leader. Can’t a massive movement be started:#

# Dump the Trump!
The CIA blocked the first attempt. Everything went haywire, and my computer started reading to me without permission …

Actually, I suspect that most Americans DO appreciate this (as do I). But H L Mencken predicted our current situation long ago: “On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” Or, as Walt Kelly’s Pogo quipped, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”

What a brilliantly farsighted prediction! Too many ‘democracies’ these days are getting the leaders they ask for rather than the leaders they need.

Paraphrasing Churchill . . . we’ll get over Trump, but the British Umpire will still be arguing about rules. Happy Fourth.

Arguing about rules is what the British do. According to their song: ‘Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves …’ and my late mother’s addition: ‘Can’t they ever, ever, ever rule them straight?’

I had British friends who didn’t appreciate that clip when the movie came out.
Arguing about rules is actually good . . . depending on the results of the argument. Trouble is, we don’t know them results until much later and people seldom learn from their mistakes.
. . . makes life exciting, it do . . .

They can’t have been true Brits. A quality of being able to laugh at themselves is one of the endearing qualities of the best of them.
These days, rules get over-ruled to the extent that they always need to be overruled. That causes constant argument and is counter-productive.

Oh I do love this and such a lot!

Thanks! I imagine a number of Americans will not share that view.
