Enough to make one Fume

Smokes are mysteries you should mean to hide

Stare with howls, as through mouth side

Green menthol cloud rolls one can’t abide —

A mist never tongues or lungs should have tried.

I have never smoked, but I have always been fascinated by watching others with their personal technique. My grandfather smoked and I remember just watching him and wondering how he could make the smoke curl. 🙂

  2. I watched my parents both smoking like chimneys, and decided that I didn’t want my hard earned money going up in smoke, and the windows in my house covered in a thick coating of sticky yellowing goo… and have never regretted my parsimony !!!

Tried it when I was a kid … nearly keeled over … never went near it again. 🙂

During one debilitating bout of chronic bronchitis the doctor visited and saw the overflowing ash tray. “That won’t do you any good!” Was all he said. In hospital with my new baby a nurse brought jug of water and an ash tray!

A few years later we learned that smoking kills, tired of the chronic health problems I had several unsuccessful attempts to stop. My next door neighbour decided to help the cause.

“You smell awful, your house stinks, I can’t stand being in your car and even your children smell revolting!” The thought that my two tiny little girls smelled bad horrified me and I stopped the habit immediately. Soon afterwards I moved house! That was forty three years ago.

  5. I started the foul habit at age 14 at the invitation of my mother. That was 1949, I smoked and puffed like a chimney and in September 1991, just stopped overnight, with the aid of a patch; (yes just one. I didn’t need to finish the full course) and haven’t had a puff since. Those patches were only available on prescription, and are now no longer available, for the simple reason that they worked.
    A vile dirty habit.

Well you know I quit 5 or so years ago now,
Was the scare I received when I found I could hardly draw breath after a brief walk up the garden one morning that finally did it for me.
Was it hard work? Damn right it was , but not as bad as other times I’d tried. This time was for keeps. Being/working in a smoke free environment (home) helped.
Would I smoke again if I could? I would like to sometimes, but the scare I got scarred me enough not to touch them again.

That was a convincing demonstration of it being a bad idea!
I have tried a couple since, notably on Christmas day when my late mother used to have her only cigarette of the year, but found:
      Just one puff,
      Was more than enough!

I can empathize. And I mean it.
Never thought I’d manage it to be honest and have surprised myself.
I can think about it these days and I don’t really crave any more at all. I can even enjoy the occasional whiff of cigarette smoke without drooling!
It was all the things that went with the smokes, drinking coffee, a glass of beer etc and especially working at the Laptop or watching a film.
I don’t know how my lungs are these days, but I’m guessing they must be a little better.

According to my doctor the improvement starts almost immediately. That was after I gave up. Lecturing is not his style.

All the talk and all the info mean squat, We know all this stuff. Addicts always do!
It simply falls to the individual eventually.
Some people can smoke all their life and miss the real nasty stuff. That is a fact and maybe you are one of the lucky ones. I hope so.

I don’t think I fell into that camp and was walking a very thin line!

I smoked regularly from the age of 18 until a couple of years ago when I suddenly resolved to give it up. I used to enjoy a pipe, but it took too much time at work with fiddling, so I went back to cigarettes.
