A fitting title for my typing being accompanied by a most spectacular thunderstorm. I just hope my computer doesn’t get fried, but I want to get my post posted.
With a Certificate of Grandfatherly-ness comes a Licence to Brag, which I hereby invoke.
The past week has seen us attend two early-morning prizegivings, one on Wednesday and the next on Thursday, for our Grade One and Grade Four grand-offspring. Also, R as a member of the choir, had to attend every one of them throughout the week. It seems to have been worth it for the final Grade Seven one, though. R tells us that the Guest of Honour was Miss South Africa!
Anyway, young J not only gained a certificate for ‘Her Positive Attitude and Diligence in All Subjects’; one of her drawings — full-face of an elephant — appeared on the programme (bottom right). Then she was also one of only four in the whole grade to have won a Book Prize, in her case for Life Skills. This is no mean achievement, as the subject covers personal and social wellbeing, physical education, and creative arts. To cap it all, she was the final custodian for the year of the ‘good behaviour’ bear.
When it came to R’s turn, we were quite apprehensive. We knew she had worked hard; however, she had done the same last term but still missed the magical 80% aggregate leading to an Academic Merit Badge — by one percent!
Class after class received their results until, towards the end of the very last batch, her name was called. She had made it! And this one isn’t just for the term. It is for the year, and she keeps it!
My young granddaughter Ruby starts school proper in January, I can’t wait to see how she goes. I think she’ll take after her maternal grand father

I hope it is run on the lines that will make her welcome and enjoy it as a set of fun challenges.

She has been going twice a week over the past few months and is loving the experience, especially with all the new children she’s meeting. I think she will fit in very well and enjoy her life at school, just as her mother, aunt and uncle did.

Congrats! Cheers to all!
How delightful to see hard work, diligence, and achievement rewarded. Something that will stick life long.
(Somehow the kids that work hard here are ignored or shrugged at. Sigh)

That one escaped me. It must be a matter of pronunciation? Or was it Double R2D2?

‘Ou’ as in person in Afrikaans. Although mine are girls rather than ‘ous’.

Thanks! Amazing what a lift it gives one when one’s kids or grandkids distinguish themselves.
