HAIKU MONDAY ENTRIES: TERROR
I have now extracted the entries from which I will try and pick the winner/next host in good time for setting a new theme and gearing up for the next round.
There is a difficult task ahead. Some I can (reluctantly) eliminate on technicalities. Then comes the dilemma of how much cognizance to take of the visuals – many of which are incredibly good and have obviously taken much effort.
Provisionally, I have decided that those with visuals will probably be given an edge, but that I will also look for a haiku which has impact and meaning even without illustration. This also means that it is possible for an entry without a picture to come up top, if the words do it all.
I shall also be looking at comments here before posting my decision tomorrow. Wish me luck. Anyone got a line I can use to consult Solomon and Daniel?

A technical word – these appear to be senyru, not haiku: haiku talk about nature; senryu, the nature of man.

For those of you unfamiliar with this Haiku Monday challenge, perhaps this will better help explain the background of this informal competition. This group just plays at this challenge. The contest originated with *Troll* (http://trollstroll.blogspot.com/), who did not have an entry this week, but is an acknowledged master at the form. It started as a little wordplay among friends, and a few of us outliers found it and joined. Now we have new blog-friends as a result. (Some of the rest of us amateurs often do well to get the 5-7-5 in correctly. It is not an easy form to master correctly.) I was personally drawn to the challenge of telling a coherent story with so few words available to use.
Most of the time, the minimum requirement is a three line 5-7-5 format where the first line is 5 syllables, the second line is 7 syllables, the last line is 5 syllables. The best haiku make use of both Kigo (seasonal reference) and Kireji (cutting word or punctuation) which is explained at (http://www.haikusociety.com/learn/kireji-and-kigo) The Kigo goal is to join two separate images/emotions in one integrated verse. (There are other. longer, forms than this one.)
You have seen some of these other elements of a haiku in some of these entries (beyond syllables). The surprise switch has been well done in a few of these. Rhyming is a concept that normally does not enter into haiku, perhaps because of its origin in Japanese, and the difference between its parent language and the strains of English we are all using here.
For whatever that is worth, maybe it helps to better explain how Colonialist, with his penchant for wordplay, was drawn into the competition – and won! Certainly he has a way with words.

Just remember to keep to the count of seveteen syllables, for the purposes of this particular haiku comp. Must be exact. Others allow a lot of latitude in that.
