I spend a lot of time at school each day,
More so, I fear I’m bound to say,
Than when I was a scholar,
For in those days I liked to shirk
And was averse to any work
That I just couldn’t foller.
Well, yesterday the inter-house
For junior hockey, I and spouse
Attended all the morning,
And there we watched our little J
Put in such creditable play
That we were far from yawning.
This morning saw us as supports —
R’s senior inter-house-type sports —
‘Our’ house came out as leaders;
Then afternoon was junior squad,
Where J did anything but plod,
And was one of the speeders.
Tomorrow I will bunk from school,
But still I have to go to pool,
For club swim for young R there,
At least I won’t get dunce’s stool,
As when I always played the fool;
From that, I have got far there!
Our lives are quite similar when it comes to “school,” Col! We divide our time and attention between 11-year old soft ball and the 9-year old in swim team. We are the ones to drive to and from practice and it would seem we are reliving the years we did this with our children, and now our grandchildren. I sometimes wonder at how long we can keep this up, but I sure wouldn’t miss out on the opportunity! I wish I had your talent to put my “thoughts to poem.” 🙂

We had an extra ‘generation’ to do with ferrying a 13 years younger sister-in-law after she lost her father, before we even started on our own two kids four years apart. Then, the grandkids were in two batches of two some ten years apart, and three years apart in each batch, so it has never really let up!

Oh my goodness! That’s a lot of responsibility. I do relate on some levels, and wonder at times what my life might have been like had I not had so much responsibility. I married at 19 and took on a 7 and 3 year old before my children were born. I do think I’ve developed a very resilient nature…that’s got to be helpful now that I’m a senior citizen. LOL! I always enjoy the posts about your grandchildren, Col. They’re very dear to you, it’s clear. 🙂

Wow, that was an obligation to become a responsible adult FAST! At least we had some time to do some adventuring first.
They are dear indeed, except when actively resisting the music lessons I try to give them. Serve them right if I sent them to an outside teacher, but then (modestly) they wouldn’t be taught as proficiently!

wow what a busy household. Did you get a ribbon for most supportive parents?

No; I chickened out of running in the Dads’ Race, and they didn’t have a Granddads’ Race!

Our son’s school cricket team played their final league match yesterday afternoon, a thrilling encounter that ended in a draw, and I must admit that my heart was almost as sore as his at the end if the season!

A draw left both sides satisfied, but a win for his would have been a pleasant end to the season! One can get really worked up watching kids/grandkids playing sport!
